Forty-three percent of Americans think
acceptance of transgenderism has gone too far, according to a new poll funded by the
Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and conducted by independent social research organization NORC at the University of Chicago.
The survey, which had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.1 percentage points, engaged 1,019 people between March 1-13 and found that more than four in every 10 respondents say that the society has been too far accepting of transgender people. Thirty-three percent believe society has not gone far enough and 23 percent say society is "about right."
Republicans (75 percent) are far more likely to say society has gone too far in accepting transgenderism than Democrats (15 percent). Nearly half of the independents (47 percent) echo the sentiments of the Republicans. (Related:

A poll conducted by
NBC News about the same topic last year showed that
33 percent of Americans thought America "has gone too far in accepting transgender people." It was 26 percent in 2021, 33 percent in 2016 and 24 percent in 2015.
The recent poll mirrored the results of a recent survey on the American public's sentiments about male-to-female (MTF) transgender athletes playing in women's sports. Fifty-six percent of Americans believe transgender athletes should "only play on teams that match the sex assigned at their birth," while only 17 percent say they should be able to "play on teams that match their current gender identity." Twenty-five percent are unsure.
MTF trans athletes banned from competing in female world ranking events
World Athletics, the world governing body for athletics, favors the stance of the majority. It recently announced the
ban on transgender women from competing in the female category at international athletics events.
Lord Coe, the body's president, said no
transgender athlete who had gone through male puberty would be permitted to compete in female world ranking competitions starting March 31. He added that the decision was "guided by the overarching principle which is to protect the female category."
World Athletics used to allow transgender women to compete in female category provided that they reduce their amount of blood testosterone to a maximum of 5nmol/L and stay under this threshold continuously for a period of 12 months before the competition.
"Decisions are always difficult when they involve conflicting needs and rights between different groups, but we continue to take the view that we must maintain fairness for female athletes above all other considerations," Coe said. "We will be guided in this by the science around physical performance and male advantage which will inevitably develop over the coming years. As more evidence becomes available, we will review our position, but we believe the integrity of the female category in athletics is paramount."
The Council agreed to set up a working group for 12 months to "further consider the issue of transgender inclusion."
An independent chair will lead the group. It will include up to three council members, two athletes from the Athletes' Commission, a transgender athlete, three representatives from World Athletics' member federations and representatives from the World Athletics health and science department.
