A new study has revealed that 11.2 percent of late-term abortions in Quebec between 1989 and 2021 resulted in live births – a figure significantly higher than previously reported. The research, published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, analyzed 13,777 abortions performed during the 32 years, with 1,541 resulting in live births. The research team, led by Nathalie Augur, Emile Brousseau, Aimina Ayoub and William D. Fraser, used detailed abortion records to determine outcomes. A live birth in Quebec is defined as the presence of any sign of life, including breathing, a heartbeat, umbilical cord pulsation or muscle movement, regardless of the baby's viability or survival duration. (Related: Notorious abortionist Dr. Warren Hern admits late-term abortions are often performed for non-medical reasons.) According to the results, the average survival time for these cases was two hours, though some infants lived up to a day. Among the survivors, 25 percent were admitted to neonatal intensive care units, while 5.5 percent only received palliative care aimed at preventing the newborns from suffering before they inevitably pass away. Details on the remaining cases were not disclosed. The study also revealed that live births were most commonly associated with induction abortions, where labor is induced after administering a feticide like digoxin or potassium chloride. Five percent of the babies survived despite these measures. This discovery challenges earlier findings, such as data from the Abortion Survivors Network in 2023, which estimated a much lower abortion failure rate of 0.21 percent globally.

Studies in Austria, Switzerland, the U.K. and the U.S. also reported cases of late-term abortions resulting in live births

The latest study suggests that the incidence of abortion survivors is far higher not just in Quebec but all over the world. In fact, other studies from Austria, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States also indicate that a substantial percentage of late-term abortion attempts failed and resulted in live births. For instance, one Austrian study found that over 50 percent of abortion attempts between 20 and 24 weeks of gestation resulted in live births, while Swiss research revealed a 40 percent survival rate for abortions performed between 22 and 27 weeks. In the U.K., 3.2 percent of all abortions reportedly resulted in live births. In the U.S., official records also reveal instances of abortion survivors. Florida reported 16 cases between 2015 and 2018. In 2015 alone, Florida, Minnesota and Michigan recorded 10 cases of live births following abortions. Minnesota, in particular, documented five survivors as recently as 2021. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also supported the claims, revealing that over 100 infants survived abortion attempts across 12 years. Another report identified 100 survivors in just five states over approximately a decade. These numbers are believed to be underreported due to inconsistent state-level documentation requirements. However, Live Action News stressed the challenges in tracking this issue, with only a handful of U.S. states mandating the documentation of abortion survivors. Between 1999 and 2023, just eight states reported 220 cases of infants surviving abortion attempts. Experts believe the actual numbers could be far higher due to gaps in reporting protocols. However, experts also clarified that even though the statistics are startling, they represent only a fraction of the potential cases worldwide, leaving many unanswered questions about the scope and handling of this delicate issue.
