The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has killed three paramedics and wounded two civilian truck crews, some of whom are in critical condition, during an airstrike in southern Lebanon. According to Lebanon's Ministry of Public Health, the emergency workers were trying to contain a fire in the village of Froun in the southern Nabatieh Governorate when the IDF conducted an airstrike in the area on Sept. 7. The ministry called the attack a "violation of international law," noting it was the second time within 12 hours that an ambulance team had been targeted. (Related: At least a dozen civilians KILLED in Israeli airstrike targeting Gaza school.) "Israeli forces targeted a team from the Lebanese Civil Defense as they responded to fires sparked by recent Israeli air strikes," a ministry statement said, adding that the strike hit a fire truck. "Earlier today, the IDF struck and eliminated terrorists from the Amal terrorist organization that operated within a Hezbollah military structure in the area of Froun in southern Lebanon." The IDF refuted the claims and stated that the strike only "eliminated terrorists" from the Amal movement, a Shia group allied with Hezbollah. But shortly after, the Amal movement released a statement that two of the slain paramedics were their members. The movement indicated that two of their members had been killed "while performing their humanitarian and national duty in defense of Lebanon and the South." The statement does not indicate that the slain were anything but paramedics. In line with this, Brig. Gen. Raymond Khattar, the director of Lebanese Civil Defense, extended his "deepest condolences" to the families of those killed and expressed hopes for the "speedy recovery" of Mohammad Amasha, one of the wounded men, who remains in critical condition at Tebnin Governmental Hospital following surgery.

IDF has been targeting paramedics, health workers and humanitarian aid

Cross-border hostilities between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group have escalated since the beginning of the war in Gaza, with near-daily exchanges of fire between the two sides. The Lebanese Public Health Ministry disclosed that "25 paramedics from various ambulance teams have been killed, while two health workers and 94 paramedics have been injured" to date due to Israeli aggression. Meaning to say, that paramedics, health workers and humanitarian aid have been included in Israeli targets since the war started in October. In line with this, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati condemned the Sept. 7 airstrike as "a blatant violation of international laws and blatant aggression against human values." He even called for an emergency meeting with Western ambassadors and other international representatives in Beirut to demand accountability and exert pressure on Israel. "The Israeli enemy does not care about any law and continues to ignite the fire of its crimes against Lebanon and the Lebanese," Mikati said.
