According to data released by Gaza's Government Media Office on September 5,
the majority of those affected by Israel's military actions in Gaza have been women and children. The media office reported that "69 percent of the victims are children and women."
Specifically, 16,715 children and 11,308 women have been killed.
The media office added that since the conflict began, the Israeli army has perpetrated 3,556 attacks against Palestinians in Gaza. The total death toll has reached 40,878, with an additional 10,000 people either missing under the rubble or detained by Israeli forces.
Furthermore, nearly 1,000 medical and civil defense workers have been killed and 172 journalists have lost their lives. Seven mass graves have been discovered in Gaza hospitals. (Related:

The destruction includes over 170 displacement shelters, 200 government buildings and 123 educational institutions. Additionally, at least 280,000 housing units have been targeted or destroyed and more than 80,000 tons of explosives have been dropped on the region.
The media office also reported that two million Palestinians have been displaced and that more than 30 have died from starvation.
United Nations (UN) spokesman Stephane Dujarric recently highlighted the
dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, noting a 35 percent reduction in cooked meals due to evacuation orders from Israeli security forces. At least 70 kitchens have been forced to suspend operations or relocate, impacting food distribution.
In August, over one million Palestinians in central and southern Gaza did not receive food rations. On September 6, Israeli attacks across Gaza, including in Rafah and Gaza City's Al-Zaytoun neighborhood, resulted in the deaths of at least a dozen Palestinians.
WAFA news agency reported that civil defense teams were also working to recover bodies from the rubble in the Sabra neighborhood, south of Gaza City, and to locate additional missing individuals.
Women and children in Gaza are suffering the most from ongoing conflict
According to UN agencies and experts, women and children in Gaza are suffering the most from the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Thousands more have been injured, with the elderly also among those heavily affected. Experts point out that in war zones, men often take on combat roles,
leaving women, children and the elderly as primary non-combatant casualties.
Dr. Harry Johnson from the
University of Maryland Medical Center highlighted that the conflict severely limits access to health care, with facilities being damaged or inaccessible, impacting the ability to provide essential services, especially for pregnant women and children.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated that the Israeli military is striving to minimize civilian casualties. However, humanitarian agencies warn of an unprecedented crisis in Gaza due to the total siege imposed by Israel. Air raids and bombardments have damaged key facilities, including hospitals, exacerbating the difficulties in providing care.
As of Sept. 6, the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) reported an estimated 50,000 pregnant women in Gaza, with 5,500 expected to give birth within the next 30 days. About 15 percent may face complications requiring medical intervention, which is becoming increasingly challenging due to the conflict.
Dr. Dabney Evans from
Emory University noted that blockades and overwhelmed medical centers are impeding access to necessary care, both for those injured and those in need of other medical services. Health facilities in Gaza are struggling with overcrowding and a lack of supplies.
Evans emphasized the critical need for a coordinated response to address the crisis, highlighting the significant mental health impacts on women and children due to trauma and disruptions in care.
