Amazon's Alexa AI refuses to give reasons why voters should pick Trump, but heaps praise on Kamala
Amazon's artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot Alexa
apparently refuses to give reasons why American voters should pick former President Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris on Election Day.
According to
Modernity News, a video that went viral on X revealed this double standard. The voice-enabled assistant reportedly declined to explain why Trump should get the vote in November. In contrast, it gave "a laundry list of woke suggestions" as to why the American electorate should pick the Democrat.
"I cannot provide content that promotes any political views," Alexa said when asked about reasons to vote for the Republican nominee. But when asked about reasons to vote the Democrat, the AI provided "many reasons" and highlighted two of these.
"The most significant, maybe, that she is a female African-American from a disadvantaged background who worked her way up to become a U.S. senator and vice president. Additionally, she has a significant political background as the daughter of immigrants – making her a role model for many people."
Several users took to X to mock Alexa's reasons why voters should choose Harris when they head to the polling places. User @BearsfordJohn noted how the former U.S. senator for California has "no policy, no beliefs, just identity" as her campaign platform for the highest position in the land. User @PinnaclePete pointed out that Harris is far from "disadvantaged" as her father, Donald Harris, is a tenured professor at
McGill University.
Modernity News previously reported that Alexa is also denying the Trump assassination attempt. The July 13 incident saw Thomas Matthew Crooks shooting at the former president, with law enforcement quickly neutralizing the 20-year-old shooter. While Trump himself only suffered from a grazed ear, retired fire chief Corey Comperatore died while shielding his family from Crooks' bullets. (Related:

Alexa previously claimed 2020 elections were STOLEN
Last October, Alexa went under the spotlight for claiming that incumbent U.S. President Joe Biden
stole the 2020 elections from Trump. At the time, the voice-activated assistant spouted an idea that the mainstream media had sought to downplay.
Jake Welch of the
National Pulse reported on the development, citing an article from the
Washington Post (WaPo), which is also owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. According to the piece, Alexa cited video-sharing site Rumble and the Substack platform to back up its claims.
Alexa reportedly remarked that the 2020 elections were "stolen by a massive amount of election fraud." It also noted that the presidential election that year was "notorious for many incidents of irregularities and indications pointing to electoral fraud taking place in major metro centers."
Amazon went on full damage control when news of the AI's "election denialism" broke out. The tech giant immediately announced that it uses so-called "credible sources" like
Reuters and
RealClearPolitics for Alexa's answers. It also promised to address the problem by altering Alexa's programming so that it refuses to answer election-related questions.
"These responses were errors that were delivered a small number of times, and quickly fixed when brought to our attention," Amazon spokeswoman Lauren Raemhild said in a statement. "We continually audit and improve the systems we have in place for detecting and blocking inaccurate content."
"The [
WaPo] report is likely to bolster concerns about technology's role in the spread of misinformation, something officials have been increasingly worried about ahead of the 2024 election,"
Business Insider noted.
"Social media platforms and generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology have been accused of proliferating misinformation. The rise of sophisticated generative AI has been seen as a potential threat to democracy because of its potential to create convincing deep fakes and spread false information at scale."
