Jim Biden confirms to Congress that his nephew Hunter met with "spy chief of China" Patrick Ho in 2017
Political consultant and first brother James "Jim" Biden
has officially confirmed that his nephew Hunter Biden met with Patrick Ho, who the presidential son dubbed the "spy chief of China," in 2017.
He confirmed the September 2017 meeting during his testimony before Congress in February. According to Jim, he accompanied his nephew in Hong Kong to have a meeting with Ho, an executive with energy firm CEFC China Energy. Weeks earlier, the company paid both Hunter and Jim $5 million as part of a joint enterprise to identify investments for the Chinese company.
Jim recounted that the three of them had a "pleasant" lunch at the special administrative region. The executive then requested a one-on-one meeting with the presidential son. "Ho said, 'Can I borrow Hunter for, you know, a half-hour? We're going to go in the next room,'" recounted the first brother.
His testimony is possibly going to raise questions about Hunter's earlier unknown communication with Ho. Months after the Hong Kong meeting, the presidential son jokingly described the CEFC executive as "the f******g spy chief of China" in May 2018.
A mere two months after the Hong Kong meeting between Ho and the Bidens, the 70-year-old CEFC executive was arrested
and charged with money laundering in December 2017. Based on the court filing at the time, the charges were linked to CEFC China Energy's contracts in the African nations of Uganda and Chad.
Court records also revealed that the U.S. government acquired Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrants to monitor Ho on the basis that he was a probable
agent of a foreign government. By acquiring these warrants, investigators were permitted to keep electronic and physical tabs on Ho's property.
"The U.S. intends to offer into evidence, or otherwise use or disclose in any proceedings in the above-captioned matter, information obtained or derived from electronic surveillance and physical search conducted pursuant to the FISA," prosecutors declared in the court filing.
Jim Biden feigns ignorance about what Hunter and Ho discussed
Brokers for CEFC China Energy contacted Hunter in 2015, when President Joe Biden was still the second-highest U.S. official, about possible business deals. The company later paid Hunter $1 million to represent Ho, even though the first son seems not to have done any legal work on the case. (Related:

Years on, the Biden family's agreement with CEFC China energy has aroused national security concerns due to the Chinese company's relations to Chinese military intelligence.
During his testimony before Congress, Jim claimed ignorance about what his nephew talked privately with the Chinese executive. He told lawmakers that he had no idea why his nephew was invited to Hong Kong to meet with Ho – which House Republicans doubted.
"If [Hunter] wanted to volunteer what it was, he would've told me," said Jim. "I didn't pry into what he was doing."
The first brother said he also employed a former Secret Service official who worked on his oldest sibling's security detail to investigate Ho before the trip. According to Jim, the background check did not disclose anything negative about Ho.
But House GOP members pointed out that it was "odd" for Jim to "go to such lengths to hire a private investigator" to check into Ho – but refuse to pry answers from his nephew Hunter about the purpose of the Hong Kong trip. The first brother responded: "The way that we deal in my family, it wasn't odd."
