SMOKING GUN: Rep. Jim Jordan presents evidence showing how the Biden administration pressured Zuckerberg's Meta to censor Americans
Republican Rep. Jim Jordan, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, has presented what he calls "smoking-gun documents" showing how the Biden administration pressured Mark Zuckerberg's Meta Platforms
to censor American users.
According to Jordan, the documents outline how the Biden administration forced Facebook and Instagram
to censor content and stifle open discourse on public issues. An email dating back to April 2021 addressed to Zuckerberg and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg can prove that the White House is constantly pressuring the company to remove certain posts.
"These never-before-released internal documents prove that
Facebook and Instagram censored posts and altered their content moderation policies due to unconstitutional pressure from the Biden White House," Jordan explained during a press conference.
Additionally, Jordan brought up the influence of "independent" fact-checkers on Facebook's platform. He argued that these fact-checkers, a group of 10 verified people, have the sole authority to determine the accuracy of information shared on the platform, leading to potential bias and mistakes in their decisions.
For instance, fact-checkers allegedly censored information related to the laptop of Hunter Biden and labeled it as "false" during the 2020 presidential election. The congressman suggested that the fact-checkers were also involved in a politically motivated cover-up scandal.
"During the first half of 2021, social media companies like Facebook faced tremendous pressure from the Biden White House – both publicly and privately – to crack down on alleged 'misinformation,'" Jordan said.
Jordan also emphasized the allegedly demoted video post of Tucker Carlson on Facebook following demands from the White House, despite the post not violating any policies.
The email presented by Jordan reportedly showed Facebook admitting to removing content that represented "a significant incursion into traditional boundaries of free expression in the United States." The outrage of Biden's Senior Adviser Andy Slavitt regarding Facebook's refusal to censor Americans allegedly prompted the company to consider making policy changes to repair its relationship with the White House.
The documents also revealed that Facebook changed its policies following public denunciations from Biden in July 2021, accusing social media platforms of "killing people" by not censoring alleged "misinformation" related to Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19). (Related:

These internal documents from Meta only came after the Judiciary Committee announced its intention to hold Zuckerberg in contempt. Jordan warned that contempt was still a possibility if Facebook fails to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation.
The situation remains highly contentious and the allegations against Facebook and its relationship with the Biden administration are likely to be the subject of intense scrutiny and investigation in the coming days.
Jordan expands investigation to Meta's newest app
Besides the ongoing investigation on Facebook and the Biden administration,
Jordan sent a letter to Zuckerberg as a formal notice to preserve all relevant existing and future documents about content moderation and discussions of Threads with the Biden administration.
The letter expanded the scope of the February 15 subpoena to include Meta's new platform, Threads, following its launch. Jordan alleged that the evidence suggests potential coercion or collusion between the federal government and technology and social media companies to control online content.
"There are reports that Threads will enforce 'Instagram's community guidelines,' which resulted in lawful speech being moderated following pressure by the government," Jordan wrote in the letter addressed to Zuckerberg.
Based on a lawsuit filed against the Biden administration by the attorneys general of Missouri and Louisiana, the federal government had suppressed speech by pushing social media platforms to address what it deemed harmful posts related to COVID-19 and elections.
The lawsuit resulted in a partial preliminary injunction in Louisiana on July 4, preventing the Biden administration from pressuring social media companies to
remove posts and flag content. Following this ruling, the State Department canceled a regular meeting with Facebook about the 2024 election and hacking threats.
