A college in San Antonio, Texas, reportedly terminated a biology professor for teaching students the biological fact that chromosomes determine sex. Dr. Johnson Varkey was fired by St. Philip's College (SPC), part of the Alamo Colleges District, back in January. His termination stemmed from four students who walked out of his class while he was discussing the standard teaching about X and Y chromosomes in November 2022. "In his role as an adjunct professor, Varkey taught human anatomy and physiology to more than 1,500 students since 2003," First Liberty Institute (FLI), a law firm representing the fired professor, said in a statement. "During [his] 20-year employment as a biology professor at SPC, he consistently received exemplary performance reviews and was never subject to discipline. Throughout that time, he never discussed with any student his personal views – religious or otherwise – on human gender or sexuality." But Varkey's unsullied reputation was tarnished by students denying basic biological truths. Two months after the November 2022 walkout, SPC issued Varkey a notice of discipline and termination of the employment contract letter. The letter alleged that the college "received numerous complaints" about his "religious preaching, discriminatory comments about homosexuals and transgender individuals, anti-abortion rhetoric and misogynistic banter." It also falsely claimed that his teaching "pushed beyond the bounds of academic freedom with [his] personal opinions that were offensive to many individuals in the classroom." (Related: 'Woke' researchers claim scientists should ignore biology and drop terms like 'male,' 'female,' 'mother,' 'father.') FLI pointed out: "In other words, he was fired for teaching true and widely accepted concepts. The statements he made are supported by research, and consistent with his professional experience and education." Given this, the firm sent a letter to SPC asking the institution to "immediately reinstate Varkey to his position and clear his record of any wrongdoing."

SPC's termination of Varkey unlawful

FLI's letter to the college stated that Varkey's unlawful termination violates several laws that protect Americans from being punished for holding or expressing their religious beliefs. "When decision-makers at SPC terminated Varkey because of his religious beliefs and classroom statements about biology, they violated several federal and state laws. [These include] the First Amendment, the Texas Religious Freedom Restoration Act and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964," it said. The law firm also noted that Varkey's scientific statements also reflect his devout Christian religious beliefs. The fired professor also serves as an associate pastor at his San Antonio church and hosts a Bible study ministry on radio. FLI continued: "Like millions of religious Americans, Varkey has a sincerely held belief that God created humankind male and female. His faith teaches that one's sex is ordained by God; that one should love and care for the body that God gave [them]; and that one should not attempt to erase or alter [their] sex whether through drugs or surgical means." "From the boardroom to the break room, this hostile corporate culture and anti-religious bias are a serious threat to religious freedom. This reduces good people to second-class status – which is outrageous, wrong and makes a mockery of laws that protect religious Americans from discrimination." The firm ultimately remarked that Varkey "is the latest example of an everyday American who lost his job to a toxic cancel culture that is infecting employers across the country." It continued: "What SPC did is wrong and Varkey should get his job back. Public universities have no business firing professors for teaching actual science. It's harmful to academic freedom [and] harmful to religious liberty, as the college is sending a message that people of faith are not welcome and need not apply."
