One miscalculated visit from U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi could cost the country a lot in terms of diplomatic relations. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) announced on Friday, August 5, that it would cancel or suspend dialogue on several issues with the United States, ranging from military communications to climate change initiatives. The CCP's foreign ministry also said that the regime would cancel all direct communications with American military theater leaders, working meetings between defense departments and maritime security dialogues with the United States. Further, the Chinese will also suspend all cooperation with the U.S. regarding illegal immigrant repatriation, criminal justice assistance, climate talks, transnational crime and anti-drug programs. This announcement came as part of a suite of retaliatory measures by China against the United States and its partners following Pelosi's visit to Taiwan earlier in the week. This canceling of communications between military commanders in the Indo-Pacific is likely to be seen as a major escalation by the international community, as such contact is usually important in helping militaries avoid miscommunication or harmful accidents and could signal a lasting, more aggressive approach toward its rival and the self-ruled island. This statement from the CCP is the latest in a barrage of explosive rhetoric and hostile actions from Beijing, not only against the U.S. but Taiwan as well. (Related: China surges forces toward Taiwan, conducts live-fire drills as Speaker Nancy Pelosi visits.) The CCP launched 11 ballistic missiles into the waters around Taiwan last week, some of which passed over the island and into the exclusive economic zone of Japan. The regime was also suspected of launching a series of cyberattacks on Taiwanese infrastructure and has implemented import bans on over 2,000 items from Taiwan. Moreover, the Chinese military's encirclement of Taiwan also formed a kind of blockade that forced international air and sea traffic to back up. International forums and organizations such as the G7 and the ASEAN have called on the CCP to end its provocations and pursue a peaceful solution to the tensions, but it seems that China is not ready for such actions. The White House, however, is not willing to give in to China's erratic and dangerous behavior. Instead, the administration summoned the Chinese ambassador for a reprimand over the unprecedented escalations. In spite of CCP threats to regional stability, the U.S. is said to pursue de-escalation measures, including postponing one of its missile tests. White House National Security Council communications coordinator John Kirby said: "As China engages in destabilizing military exercises around Taiwan, the United States is demonstrating instead the behavior of a responsible nuclear power by reducing the risks of miscalculation and misperception." He added that this behavior is how the U.S. will defend its national security interests and values.

CCP maintains One China principle

The CCP still maintains its so-called One China principle, which states that Taiwan is a province that needs to be reunited with the mainland. The Chinese are not ruling out the use of force to achieve their goal. However, Taiwan has been self-governing since 1949, has never been controlled by the CCP and has maintained a democratic government and thriving market economy. The U.S. relations with Taiwan and China have been governed by a series of treaties and diplomatic ties stretching back to the 1970s. The U.S. adheres to the One China policy and provides an acknowledgment of it. Meanwhile, the U.S. policy mandates extensive unofficial ties with Taiwan, with the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979 mandating that the U.S. will provide arms in case Taiwan needs them for self-defense. (Related: Trump: China will DEFINITELY attack Taiwan following Russia-Ukraine example.) Put simply, the heart of the ongoing tensions between the CCP and the U.S. is their long-standing agreement that neither side will attempt to unilaterally change this status quo through force or coercion. For the CCP, however, Pelosi's visit is an attempt to change this status quo. U.S. officials have said the same with regard to China's increased military and economic aggression in the region. The White House has also accused the CCP of manufacturing crisis to justify its military expansion around Taiwan. "Beijing’s provocative actions are a significant escalation in its long-standing attempt to change the status quo. We're not going to accept a new status quo. And it's not just the United States, but the world as well.” Pelosi, who is in Japan for the last stop of her Asian tour, said China will not be allowed to succeed in its efforts to isolate Taiwan. "They may try to keep Taiwan from visiting or participating in other places, but they will not isolate Taiwan by preventing us to travel there," she said.
