Trump administration delivers relief as U.S. gas prices fall below $3 per gallon
- U.S. gas prices have dropped for the fourth consecutive week, with most states now below $3 per gallon, down 42 cents from last year.
- The White House credits President Trump’s energy policies for the decline, citing cooling inflation and economic relief for households.
- States like West Virginia, Minnesota, and Georgia are seeing significant price drops, while traditionally high-cost states like California and Hawaii also report lower prices.
- The Trump administration links the drop in gas prices to deregulation and energy independence, alongside other economic wins like declining egg prices.
- Experts warn that future gas price trends depend on economic conditions, but current prices are the lowest for March in four years.
For the fourth consecutive week, gas prices across the United States have continued to drop, with most states now seeing prices below $3 per gallon—a significant decrease from a year ago.
The national average currently stands at $3.02 per gallon, down 42 cents from $3.44 per gallon this time last year,
according to data from GasBuddy. The White House is crediting President Donald Trump’s energy policies for the decline, which is providing much-needed relief to American households grappling with inflation.
“Wall Street and Main Street should both be assured by what President Trump did in his first term... it’s even better this time around... inflation is cooling... the national average of the price of gas is down 42 cents from one year ago,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Monday.
The drop in gas prices is part of a broader trend of cooling inflation under the Trump administration, which has prioritized cutting regulations and unleashing American energy production. This approach stands in contrast to the previous administration, which saw gas prices rise by 49 cents during the same period.
State-by-state relief
The decline in gas prices is being felt nationwide, with some states seeing particularly sharp drops. In West Virginia, the average price per gallon is now $2.85, down from $3.26 a year ago. Minnesota drivers are paying $2.96 per gallon, compared to $3.21 last year. Georgia has seen prices fall to $2.89 from $3.36, while Florida’s average is $3.10, down from $3.47.
Even in states with traditionally higher gas prices, such as California ($4.66), Hawaii ($4.52), and Washington ($4.08), prices are noticeably lower than they were a year ago. More than two-thirds of gas stations across the country are now offering fuel below $3 per gallon, according to GasBuddy.
“This is real leadership in action,” said Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart (FL-26). “President Trump is delivering on the mandate that the American people elected him on.”
A broader economic win
The drop in gas prices is just one example of the Trump administration’s economic successes. Earlier this year, the White House highlighted a nearly 50%
decline in egg prices since the end of January, another key indicator of cooling inflation. The administration attributes these wins to its focus on deregulation and energy independence, which have stabilized costs for everyday Americans.
“After years of soaring prices and economic pain, the Trump Administration’s focus on cutting regulations and unleashing American energy is leading to stability for Americans’ bottom lines,” the White House said in a statement Monday.
What’s next for gas prices?
While the current decline is welcome news for consumers, experts caution that
economic conditions could influence future trends. Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, noted that the drop in gas prices is partly tied to slowing economic activity. “When the economy slows, gasoline demand drops—along with demand for other refined products like diesel and jet fuel,” De Haan said.
However, if economic conditions improve, gas prices could rise again. For now, though, Americans are enjoying the lowest March gas prices in four years, a testament to the Trump administration’s effective policies.
As gas prices continue to fall and inflation cools, the Trump administration is delivering on its promises to ease financial burdens on American households. With most states now seeing gas prices below $3 per gallon, the administration’s focus on energy independence and deregulation is paying off. For millions of Americans, the relief at the pump is a clear sign that
President Trump’s policies are working.
