  • U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi accused the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of concealing thousands of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein investigation.
  • Bondi received only 200 pages of documents initially, primarily consisting of flight logs and contact lists, which the FBI claimed were the only available materials.
  • Upon discovering that the FBI New York Field Office possessed thousands of additional documents, Bondi demanded their immediate release, giving the FBI a deadline of Feb. 28.
  • Bondi ordered FBI Director Kash Patel to conduct an investigation into why her previous orders were not followed and requested a comprehensive report of findings and proposed personnel action within 14 days.
  • The release of the withheld documents is expected to shed light on Epstein's network and activities, promising greater transparency and accountability in the investigation.
U.S. Attorney General (AG) Pam Bondi has accused the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of concealing thousands of documents related to its investigation of the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. She put forward this accusation in a letter Thursday, Feb. 27 to FBI Director Kash Patel, demanding the release of all withheld materials. According to Bondi, the FBI had initially provided her office with with approximately 200 pages of documents, primarily consisting of flight logs and contact lists. The bureau assured her that these were the only materials available. But she later found out on Feb. 26 that the FBI New York Field Office was in possession of thousands of documents related to the probe. "Despite my repeated requests, the FBI never disclosed the existence of these files," the AG wrote. Given this revelation from a source within the field office, Bondi demanded the immediate release of all withheld materials "regardless of how such information was obtained." She gave a deadline of 8:00 a.m. on Feb. 28 for the delivery of the aforementioned materials, with "no withholdings or limitations" to her or Patel's access. Bondi also ordered Patel to conduct an investigation as to why her orders were not followed. "You will deliver to me a comprehensive report of your findings and proposed personnel action within 14 days," she commanded the new FBI director. Epstein, a financier by profession, was arrested in July 2019 on charges of sex trafficking. He died by suicide while in custody at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, New York in Manhattan as he was awaiting trial. (Related: Jeffrey Epstein's "suicide" likely a cover-up, internal prison files show.) His former associate Ghislaine Maxwell was convicted of sex trafficking in 2021 for her role in facilitating Epstein’s abuse of young girls. The case has remained a focal point of public and media scrutiny, with many calling for full transparency.

Initial release of declassified Epstein files falls short

The development marks a significant escalation in the ongoing effort to uncover the full truth behind Epstein's crimes and his network of associates. The release of Epstein-related documents has been a long-standing promise of the second Trump administration, which has prioritized transparency in its early weeks. President Donald Trump had vowed to declassify files tied to Epstein, a pledge that has garnered significant public and political interest. This he did by ordering the release of a first tranche of documents on Thursday, the same day Bondi wrote her letter to Patel. But the initial release of 200 pages dubbed "The Epstein Files: Phase I" disappointed many. Conservative commentator Glenn Beck likewise expressed his disappointment, calling the released files "a total joke." Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) said of the documents: "This is not what we or the American people asked for and a complete disappointment." The congresswoman lamented that neither she nor the House Oversight Committee "were given or reviewed the Epstein documents" released Thursday. A source told the New York Post that the initial batch of files contained Epstein's address book, "including a list of contacts without further context." However, the withheld documents Bondi requested are believed to include critical details about Epstein's network and activities. As the investigation unfolds, the public awaits the release of the remaining Epstein documents, hoping for clarity and justice in a case that has long been shrouded in secrecy. The collaboration between Bondi and Patel promises to bring accountability to the FBI and shed light on one of the most notorious criminal cases in recent history.
