  • "Anti-MAGA" hats with the slogan "Canada Is Not For Sale" went viral in Canada as a response to President Donald Trump's tariff threats and suggestions of annexing Canada.
  • The hat gained national attention when Ontario Premier Doug Ford wore it during a high-profile meeting with provincial leaders and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
  • Designed by Ottawa entrepreneur Liam Mooney, the hat has sold nearly 50,000 units – including over 100 to American customers – and become a symbol of defiance and Canadian solidarity.
  • The cap has garnered bipartisan praise, uniting Canadians across political lines as a statement of national pride and resistance.
So-called "Anti-MAGA" (Make America Great Again) hats have gone viral in Canada for bearing the statement "Canada Is Not For Sale," seemingly in opposition to President Donald Trump's proposition for Canada to be annexed as the 51st state of the United States. The hat gained national attention when Ontario Premier Doug Ford wore it during a high-stakes meeting with outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other provincial leaders to discuss Trump's vow to impose additional tariffs on Canadian imports. (Related: Annexing Canada would be like adding a second California.) Liam Mooney, an Ottawa-based entrepreneur, designed the cap with the "Canada Is Not For Sale" statement in response to Trump's tariff threats and calls for Canada's annexation. Since Ford wore it, he reports that he has sold tens of thousands of the hats for between CA$45 to CA$55 each ($32 to $39), and it has become a viral sensation as what Canadians believe is a creative rebuttal and a symbol of defiance and solidarity. The hat's rise to prominence comes at a critical juncture for Canada, as the country faces the dual pressures of a potential trade war with its largest trading partner and internal political divisions. Trump's threats to impose tariffs on Canadian goods have sparked fears of economic fallout, with experts warning that such measures could cripple Canada's economy while also driving up prices for oil and other goods in the United States. The timing is particularly fraught, as Trudeau prepares to step down in March after nearly a decade in power, with the opposition Conservatives leading in polls ahead of a federal election scheduled for later this year. Mooney, who runs a design firm with his fiancee Emma Cochrane, said the idea for the hat was born out of frustration after watching a Fox News segment in which host Jesse Watters suggested it would be a "privilege" for Canada to be annexed by the United States. "We were shocked by the hostility of the interview," Mooney told Reuters. "It was a small act of patriotism to respond to these big threats and this big bluster." The couple spent hours designing the hat, which features the "Canada Is Not For Sale" message written in a Canadian-designed typeface. The hat is sold in three colors – red, white and blue – and features the Canadian flag emblazoned on the sides.

"Anti-MAGA" hat becomes viral as a unifying symbol

Within days after Ford was pictured wearing the hat to the summit with Trudeau and other provincial leaders in Ottawa, Mooney received more than 45,000 orders for the hat. He reports that he has even sold the hat to at least 150 customers in the United States. The cap has also drawn praise from Canadians of all political leanings, with even Ford's liberal and progressive critics applauding his gesture. "I WANT THIS HAT!!!!!!!!" former Liberal Party Minister of Environment and Climate Change Catherine McKenna wrote on X, formerly Twitter. "Great hat, I hope they make that in an orange," quipped Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew, referencing the colors of his party, the left-wing New Democratic Party. "Canadian pride is something we can really lean on right now," he added, after the meeting with Trudeau, Ford and other provincial leaders. "And there are few things that unite Canadians more, for better or for worse, than our neighbor to the south."
